Introduction to Porutham

People have tried to take the best decision possible because marriage is a vow which cannot be broken. For marriage alliance, the Hindus practice 'star matching' or 'porutham'. It is an essential pre-requisite for a marriage alliance where they compare the horoscopes of both the boy and the girl who plan to get married. It is believed that the better the stars match, the better the compatibility between the two individuals and the deeper will be the intimacy of the couple culminating in a lasting marriage.

The parents of the couple considering marriage and the elders of both the families get together and follow a method to see if the horoscope of the boy and the girl match. This method was devised by ancient sages and is based on the birth stars and 'janma rashis' or 'moon signs' of the couple in question and is called the Koota Agreement. Here, out of twenty points each for the girl and the boy, eight or ten are considered for matching. According to the ancient study, there are twenty four stars in oval configuration of zodiac (the nakshatras) and nine planets (navgrahas) through which the zodiac transits its astral influences on human beings. Porutham considers the natural tendencies of the boy and the girl based on the horoscopes, and accordingly the marriage of the two can be matched. The following five matches out of ten are considered important: Ganam, Rajju, Dhinam, Raasi and Yoni and out these five, Rajju and Dhinam are given the greatest importance.

A chart is prepared and fashioned to include the best possible Koota agreements between the couple which are then enumerated. It is divided into twelve columns. Thus, in the chart, the first column contains the name of the man's star (any of the twenty four stars which may belong to him). The second column has the moon sign of the boy or his janma rashi. In the next ten columns there are ten different agreements sorted out between the woman's and the man's stars which are then categorized as Average with three sub-categories of Dosham (A), Absent (-), Bad (B) or Good (G ). For easy calculation, a good agreement is given one point, average agreement is given half point and bad agreement is given no point. Accordingly, accumulation of seven points or more gets rated as a very good alliance in the last column, between five and seven points means average and below five points means a bad alliance.
