Love Life in Norse Astrology - The Role of Thor

In Norse astrology, Thor (represented by the planet Mars) is one of three planets that indicate the quality and nature of our love life. The other two planets are Freyja (Sun) and Frigga (Venus). Thor represents how we abandon a comfortable environment, such as our family, to establish relationships with others. He indicates our hopes and wishes, especially what we seek in friends and lovers. And he represents the efforts that we make to establish relationships with others.

Because Thor has an affinity with the Day East house of Norse astrology, we also look to that octant to determine how we make to establish meaningful partnerships.

The first Norse horoscope that we analyze is that of actress Elizabeth Taylor, who had 8 marriages and 7 husbands. Thor is in the Sowilo, the rune of solar power, magical will, and continuous movement. She clearly had the charisma and drive to seek and secure any partner that she desired. In her chart, Thor is the planet with the most aspects, making him more powerful. Thor's conjunction with Freyja (Sun) and Skadhi (Mercury) causes her define her sense of self by her marriages. Her Day East house contains Odin (Moon), the wanderer, so she is never permanently satisfied with her partners. The primary rune of the Day East house is Nauthiz, rune of scarcity and sacrifice, so she always felt a need for a partner to make her life whole.

If we account for his station in life, we see a similar effect of Thor in the Norse horoscope of Nicolas Sarkozy, president of France. President Sarkozy has had three wives (and two children). And while married, both he and his wives had extramarital affairs. Thor is in Ehwaz, rune of partnership and adaptation, so he always seeks a spouse. A conjunction of Odin, the wanderer, makes him restless and dissatisfied with his partners. A sextile of Freyja adds a sexual intensity to the partnership. His Day East house contains prosperous Freyr (Jupiter) which gives him success. His wives have been accomplished career women in their own right. But the planet of disruption, Loki (Uranus), is also in this house, so for him alliances break as easily as they form.

Mexican painter Frida Kahlo had but one husband, but she also had several affairs (male and female) while married. As with Elizabeth Taylor, Kahlo's Thor is the most intensely aspected planet in the chart, and this emphasizes her stormy relationship with painter Diego Rivera. Like Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor, Kahlo and Rivera divorced, but, upon feeling empty and deprived, immediately remarried. Kahlo's Day East house is filled with feminine planets - Freyja, Frigga, and the Norns (Neptune), making her powerful, yet feminine. Dagaz, rune of transformation and reversal, is primary in the Day East house, and this made her relationship to Rivera (and others) stormy.

We see a more subdued Thor in the chart of Diana Spencer, Princess of Wales. Thor is in Ansuz, the rune of magic, wind, and communication. Though desirable attributes in themselves, this does not lend energy to Thor. Thor is in the Day West house, domain of law, government, and large organizations. In this, we see how her relationship to Prince Charles was subordinated to affairs of state. Odin, strong in his own rune Ansuz, opposes Thor, adding ephemerality to her relationships, along with an urge to abandon near-imprisonment within the house of Windsor.
